Anise has always felt insecure especially when compared to her cheerleader sister, but starting high school forces her to venture outside her comfort zone to search for a way to belong. She turns to marching band, lured by the motto of "One Band, One Sound, One Family," where she meets Felicity, another freshman, who is seeking a best friend. They are challenged by band and then tested by teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, suicide and bipolar depression which threatens to destroy their fledgling friendship. Anise realizes that she must step up, speak up, and hold tight to keep Felicity from harming herself.
