Butterflies in my stomach

Ever wonder where the phrase "butterflies in my stomach" comes from or exactly to what it refers?

I recently gave one of my characters butterflies in her stomach due to nerves.

What does butterflies in your stomach feel like? Most experience a squirmy, ticklish sensation.

Does the butterfly feeling only come with nerves? Probably, but the triggers may vary. It could be the anticipation of taking a big test, fear from standing on a high ledge, the excitement of a first date, or any type of high-pressure situation.

Are actual butterflies involved? No.

What causes butterflies in the stomach? It is the fight-or-flight response of the body's sympathetic nervous system.

Can the butterfly feeling escalate to anything else? Yes. Someone could also experience increased heart rate, shaking or trembling, feeling nervous or anxious, sweaty hands, feeling lightheaded or dizzy, shortness of breath, nausea, and/or need to use the bathroom.

What can I do to alleviate these feelings? Deep, calming breaths are always a good place to start.

Can the butterflies mask a more serious problems? The butterflies in the stomach feeling is a normal and common experience for most people and not a cause for concern. However, if the sensation is constant or persistent, it is a good idea to consult a doctor for a further evaluation.
