I am not a smother (The Goldburgs term for their mother). My goal is to raise my boys to leave the house. At some point. When they can support themselves.
So, people are surprised to hear that I make them breakfast during the week and pack them school lunches. I know they can do this for themselves, but I'm their mother and I want them to remember this. It's one of the small things I can still do for them.
I don't do the cutesy notes or sandwiches in the shape of a heart. Though, I have drawn pictures on a paper lunch bag when they left their reusable lunch box at school. I'm partial to flowers and their names in pink.
I just want them to remember these acts of love when I tell them to take out the garbage or drive to the store for a gallon of milk.
And on Valentine's Day.
And Mother's Day.
