The best music for your brain

Updated: Apr 19, 2023

When I'm driving, I listen to pop music on the radio. If I want to relax, I might listen to classical music. If I'm writing, I usually turn on Imagine Dragons. I've discovered that '80s rock ballads are excellent for editing. And when I exercise? Okay, I don't exercise, but if I did, I'm sure I would listen to something with a driving beat to get me through my workout.

Songs have a memorable melody; but beneath the surface, music has its own pattern with rhythm and harmony to give it a distinct style.

The certain types of music have distinctive chord progressions or harmonies.. Rock and roll uses I-IV-V. The most used chord progression for pop music is I-V-vi-IV. For jazz, the 7th chord is used in the progression of ii7-V7-I7.

Then each style of music has its own recognizable beat such as rock, swing, Latin and pop.

The type of music can have an impact on mood. Classical and meditation music offer the greatest mood-boosting benefits, while heavy metal and techno music can be ineffective and even detrimental.

But not everyone likes classical music. Listening to your favorite type of music can improve connectivity in the neural pathway or the patterns of the brain. Neural pathways are connections in your brain. Connections to learning a new skill, to changing a habit or to creating automatic behaviors like reading, driving or riding a bike.

Whether you are trying to learn something new or attempting to calm down after a stressful day, your favorite music is the best music to stimulate your brain.
