The Other Cat

Here is the story about our other new cat.

If you read "My Goofy Cat" post, we had to wait awhile before Una was available to come home with us. Well, waiting was hard.

Tucker (a tuxedo and our remaining cat) was still waking up my husband at oh-dark-thirty to play. He really needed a playmate (Tucker, not my husband.)

We ended up stopping by a pet store to see if they had any kittens available. Our pet store offered cats that came from a shelter in Eastern Washington. We had adopted Tucker from that shelter.

There was one kitten. He was a gray tabby named "Hide-and-Seek." With that name, I knew he didn't have the personality I wanted. But he came out to see me. He purred. He was so cute.

My. husband also liked this cat, but if we got this one, he thought we should give up Una. We only needed one other cat to play with Tucker, not two.

I protested since Una only had one eye. No one else would want to adopt this poor cat with one eye. We could get two kittens. He said we'd talk about this later.

He did agree we should take home Hide-and-Seek. Since we weren't planning to get a cat, we didn't have a cage with us. So he went home to get a cage and I stayed at the pet store.

I didn't spend all my time in the cat adoption area with Hide-and-Seek. He already had a reserved tag on his cage, so he would be mine. I spent some time on my phone trying to come up with a new name for this cat. Hide-and-Seek was a mouthful, plus I hoped his personality would change.

After I found some possible names, I went back to the kitten to try them out. The only one that he chirped at was Jasper. I decided to be creative with the spelling. My boys liked to play jazz, so Jas became Jazz. He was a cat and purred, so his new name was Jazzpurr.

When we got him home, we let him out in our bathroom and closed the door.

Well, Tucker knew something was in there and he wanted to investigate. We kept them separate for that night, but the next day, Tucker pushed he was into the bathroom. There was much sniffing and a little bit of hissing, but overall, it wasn't a bad first meet.

Jazzpurr had no interest in leaving the bathroom that day. Then, he explored our bedroom and hopped up on the bed. He refused to explore any other part of the house. We have two floors, so we just figured he'd be our upstairs cat.

But, he came out of his shell. He loved me and followed me around upstairs. He had the tiniest meow. He let me pick him up and was so sweet.

Then, we got Una. (You can read about that in the "My Goofy Cat" post.)

Jazzpurr followed her downstairs one day. They all got along fine for the first month or so. Tucker had not one, but two kittens to play with and he was happy. So, was my husband since Tucker stopped waking him up at oh-dark-thirty.

Then something happened when we were gone. Whatever it was (maybe misplaced aggression), changed the relationship between Tucker and Jazzpurr. They both have a scaredy-cat personality and were easily spooked.

Tucker hid under couch and ran there every time he saw Jazzpurr.

It has taken a lot of patience and herbal/pheromone therapy, but Tucker is now out and about. He always growls at Jazzpurr even if Jazzpurr is just walking through the room. Jazzpurr thinks Tucker should play and often chases Tucker. At least Una plays with both of them.

I hope someday they will all be friends again.

There are glimpses of hope like when all three are playing chase with a feather and taking turns. Or when they all eat in the same area. Sometimes Tucker and Jazzpurr will eat off the same plate.

Until then, Tucker and Una are my husband's favorite cats and Jazzpurr is mine.
