Try and try again

Have you ever had something that you want to do, but just can't?

Snorkeling has been like that for me. I've tried snorkeling with my husband. I hate getting water in my mask. It's no fun having water in my eyes or my nose. Then, I forget to breathe through my mouth which causes me to panic, especially if there is water at my nose in the mask.. My favorite snorkeling trip was on a boat when they gave me a pool noodle to lean on. That was the best. I could extend my arms and look down whenever I wanted. Or just float around with my head up, but still be involved with the activity.

Once we had kids, I didn't always get in the water because one of my boys was like me with snorkeling. He didn't think it was cool to use a pool noodle. So, the other boys went with my husband.

Now, that the boys are all off on their own or at college, my husband and I took our first vacation without them. And there was snorkeling. I tried, but when it came to getting in the water with the snorkel gear on, I just couldn't. I chickened out and stayed on the boat.

It was a free snorkel tour at an all-inclusive resort, so the staff didn't really give you time to adjust. It was all - go this way, follow me and keep up. I just wasn't comfortable enough to try this. And there was no noodle option, only a thin life vest.

I felt bad. I couldn't replace the boys as my husband's snorkel buddy.

After the fail on the boat, he had me try with just the goggles and mouth piece in the shallow just off the shore. I could put my face in with the mask, but when it came time to breathe through the snorkel, I just couldn't. I didn't want to breathe through my mouth. So, I gave him back his gear, walked out of the water and climbed in a beach lounge chair to read.

Then, he mentioned a full face mask with snorkel as an option. They didn't have one at the resort, so when I got home, I looked on Amazon. There were many available in different colors and prices. I guess there is a possible problem with the build-up of CO2 in the full face mask, but I don't think I'll be going on long snorkel trips, but that shouldn't be a problem.

I just tested one in my bathtub. I can breathe through my nose in the water! I loved it. I did have to adjust the straps since some water did escape at my forehead, but I think this is the answer. I'm so glad I kept trying until I found something that would work.

Of course, I will be about six months before we go on vacation again where there will be snorkeling, but fingers crossed. I don't want my. husband to miss the boys too much. It is cheaper not having them on our vacations.
